An extensive response with many references may seem like a finished literature review. But the length and number of citations do not describe how the studies were searched, selected, and evaluated.
Before using it in a session, an academic paper or a clinical decision, identify which product is in front of you. Exploring literature, developing a narrative explanation, and conducting a systematic review are related tasks, not interchangeable.
deep research helps to explore a question
In Itaca, deep research and its Evidence tab They allow you to review sources, links, dates, and fragments related to the answer. This can help you orient yourself in a topic, locate readings, or prepare a first comparison.
It does not in itself demonstrate that all relevant bases were searched, that predefined inclusion criteria were applied, or that two reviewers evaluated the studies independently. A response can be useful without fulfilling those conditions; the error lies in attributing it to a method that has not been documented.
Also check the relationship between the assertion and the reference. A real quote may not support the specific phrase or refer to another population. The critical reading in response to his question It remains necessary even if the link is visible.
A narrative review develops an interpretation
A narrative review can explain concepts, cover debates, or integrate perspectives from a field. It should describe its purpose and allow for the recognition of sources, but its search and selection do not necessarily follow the method of a systematic review.
Not all narrative reviews are of the same rigor. Report how the literature was gathered, why those sources were chosen, and what limitations their scope has. Do not call a selection exhaustive when it cannot demonstrate that.
Educational example: Preparing an exposé on how treatments are documented in the file may require a narrative synthesis of principles and examples. If you then want to estimate the effect of a defined intervention, you will need another approach and another method.
A systematic review is defined by its methods.
The Cochrane Handbook describes «explicit, systematic methods» aimed at minimizing biases. A systematic review requires explicit questions and criteria, documented search, selection of studies, evaluation, and synthesis consistent with its objective.
Not every systematic review includes a meta-analysis. Combining statistical results is a decision that depends on the studies and the question. Also, adding a diagram at the end does not turn an informal search into a systematic one.
If that is the product that your program or project requires, work with adequate supervision and methodological support. AI can assist with limited tasks, but it does not replace the controls, documentation, or responsibility of the research team.
Choose the method before evaluating the output
To understand a new topic and locate initial sources, an exploration may be sufficient. For a teaching session, you may need a limited synthesis and a critical reading of selected articles. To answer with systematic pretension, you will need to plan the process before selecting results.
Start with formulate a delimited clinical question. Next, write down what you want to deliver and what you cannot claim. «Initial selection of readings» and «systematic review» create different expectations, even though both documents have twenty references.
The guide for Prepare a bibliographic session with AI It addresses a limited teaching use. Do not present it as a complete review of a field if you have only examined a few papers.
State how you came to the conclusion
Save questions, search terms, dates, sources consulted, and selection decisions when they are relevant to the work. Identify where AI was involved and what you personally checked. A bibliography does not document all that journey.
At Clinical responses of Itaca, Depending on the doubt, one can choose between a brief orientation and a more extensive investigation. In both cases, the answer deserves review. Greater breadth does not eliminate uncertainty nor does it turn an exploratory tool into a systematic review team.
The final question is not how many pages he produced. It is what method allows him to support his conclusions and what scope he can honestly declare. If that is clear, he can use the tool without promising more than his work demonstrates.
