How to test a medical AI assistant with five exercises

Internist talks with a patient while reviewing an organized clinical context

A demonstration can show an impeccable performance. What you need to know is whether the tool retains important details when the conversation includes interruptions, changes of topic, or corrections. A brief test, with fictitious material and expected results written down, allows you to observe it before incorporating it into the consultation.

These five exercises are a practical proposal Itaca for evaluating documentation and consulting sources. They do not constitute clinical validation or a comparison of brands. Their goal is to help you recognize what works in your way of working and what needs adjusting.

Prepare a test that can be repeated

Choose a typical encounter type in your specialty and write a one-page fictional script. Include the reason for the consultation, relevant background information, information that remains unconfirmed, and a plan that has already been decided upon. Reserve a copy as a reference. Do not add names, documents, or actual recordings of patients to this initial assessment.

Before starting, note three elements that must appear and two that must not appear. For example: the date of a study must be kept; a finding reported by a companion must not become an observation by you. Use exactly the same material if you compare tools.

1. Check how a correction is preserved

In the script, first say that a study was conducted on Monday and then clarify that it was on Wednesday. Examine whether the final document retains the accuracy and avoid presenting both dates as independent facts.

Do not evaluate solely on spelling. The question is whether the correction maintains its meaning and whether it is easy to correct the draft when something goes wrong. Repeat the exercise after changing the grading format: a different template should not hide essential information.

2. Distinguish the referred from the observed

Add a phrase like «the attendant comments that he/she has slept less» and another like «that measurement was not performed today». Check if the result identifies the source of the information and respects what is missing.

Fluent writing does not compensate for incorrect attribution. Record the specific error, if any, rather than limiting yourself to a general rating of “good grade.” That makes it easier to decide whether it’s a stylistic adjustment or a problem that prevents you from using the result.

3. Change the document's recipient

Using the same script, request a professional note and a summary for the patient, if the tool offers both. The second should change the vocabulary and organization, while retaining the instructions from the first. Check that it does not add recommendations for filling in blank spaces.

This exercise tests a frequent need: finishing several documents from a single query. Our page Clinical documentation with AI explains the flow of preparing notes for review.

4. Open a reference

If you are also evaluating medical responses, formulate a general information question and open a cited source. Look for the claim you intend to support: the population, date, and scope must correspond with the answer. Then ask a follow-up question that changes a condition, such as the ambulatory versus hospital setting.

Itaca You can explore this use through clinical answers with sources. Evaluate the relationship between response and reference, in addition to the ease of continuing the conversation.

5. Complete the full work

Track the timeline from when you start preparing the material until you have a document that you consider usable. Include reading, corrections, and transferring it to the place where it is needed. A draft generated quickly may require too many subsequent actions.

Classify each result as usable, usable after adjustment, or unusable. Note the reason and repeat with another fictitious script. Five exercises do not guarantee future performance, but they provide a more concrete basis for deciding what to try next.

What should be clear by the end

The useful decision is specific: «This type of note and this format help me,» or «I still need to resolve the attribution of information.» Avoid turning a good demonstration into a conclusion about all possible uses.
